Nigeria Developing a policy for deployment of 5G technology

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has announced that it is developing a policy for the deployment of 5G technology in the country. The move follows the launch of 5G trials in cooperation with MTN Nigeria in six areas in November last year.

Amidst the controversy behind the 5G technology network with Covid-19, it has spread fear around the world, especially in Nigeria that there is a connection between the spread of Covid-19 via 5G network technology.

It has been cleared by relevant authorities that there is no link of whatsoever between 5G network and Covid-19.

A three-month tests carried out involved different equipment vendors and utilized spectrum in the 3.5GHz and 2.6GHz bands in order to assess the performance of the technology in comparison with existing platforms and ensure that it is in compliance with health and safety guidelines.

Based on the successful conclusion of the trials, the NCC has begun developing a policy for the deployment of 5G more widely, and this will be followed ‘in due course’ by a public consultation with relevant stakeholders, including the Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy, the Ministry of Health and mobile operators.

According to report, the commission added that 5G network will not be deployed until the policy is concluded and approved.
